Our story
Discover more of the LloydGrey history, which has also starred dozens of talented staff and so many wonderful clients who have helped power our evolution as we empowered theirs.
The LloydGrey story began in 1985. Nicki Lloyd and Tim Grey both graduated with BA Honors degrees in Visual Communications and Graphic Design at the same time, but on opposite sides of the world.
Their paths first crossed in London in 1990. Nicki had just arrived from Australia after working for five years at Barrie Tucker Design in Adelaide and on the Gold Coast. Tim was heading up a design team at Design House Consultants in Camden, North London. With a shared passion for design, they first collaborated on small freelance projects, and then later worked together on major branding projects at Tutssel St John Lambie-Nairn. Clients included the BBC, TVI Switzerland, TSI Portugal, Carlton Television for London, and Vickers Plc. Following a trip around Europe, and inspired by their ability to collaborate, they moved to Brisbane in 1993 and founded Lloyd Grey Design.
1993 – 1999
The business quickly grew, securing branding and corporate communications projects for a diverse range of clients, including Turnbull Fox Phillips (Phillips Group), The Queensland Government, The Byrne Group, Brisbane Boys College, EDI, Queensland Nickel, and GWA International. By the early 2000s, Lloyd Grey Design had expanded to a team of fourteen and had established itself as the largest specialist branding agency in Queensland. The firm attracted both local and international clients, including BHP Billiton, Greyhound Australia, Suncorp Bank and Powerlink, and US based companies Duke Energy and Best Doctors.
2000 – 2009
In 2011, Nicki Lloyd was honoured with the Queensland Premier’s Smart State Design Fellowship, recognising her significant contribution to fostering a design culture within Queensland. As part of this accolade, she was appointed to the Queensland Design Council. Concurrently, Nicki participated in the Ulysses Program, an initiative by the Queensland Government’s Department of Employment, Economic Development, and Innovation, designed to help businesses harness the power of design-led practices. As a brand auditor and mentor, Nicki played a pivotal role in helping manufacturing companies enhance their export potential in international markets.
2010 – 2019
Adapting to changing technology and market dynamics, Lloyd Grey Design restructured its business model in 2013, streamlining to a core team of five and rebranding as LloydGrey. This agile and specialised team allowed the company to provide greater flexibility and a wider range of services, particularly as brands increasingly moved online and into social media. Today, LloydGrey leverages a network of experts in copywriting, web development, photography, video production, and other brand-related services to deliver bespoke solutions for clients.
2020 – PRESENT
As LloydGrey has evolved, it has attracted a diverse portfolio of clients, including privately owned Queensland companies, family businesses (many in regional areas), and long-standing clients seeking brand refreshes. The agency’s focus has shifted from one-off projects to long-term engagements, ongoing brand management, and mentorship. Some clients have partnered with LloydGrey for over fifteen years, a testament to the lasting relationships and trust they’ve built.
